Sancho Pistola’s Closes in Fishtown After 12 Years

PHILADELPHIA - The Fishtown dining scene has lost a long-standing neighborhood fixture. Sancho Pistola's, the popular Mexican restaurant and bar at 19 W. Girard Ave., has permanently closed after 12 years of operation.

Another Pistola's Closes: Fishtown Staple Sancho Pistola's Quietly Shuts Its Doors

The closure was confirmed Tuesday evening by a simple sign in the restaurant's front window reading, "Sorry, we are permanently closed." The exact closure date and the reasons behind the decision remain unconfirmed, as owners Casey Parker and Joe Gunn have not yet commented publicly on the Fishtown shutdown.

Opening in 2014, Sancho Pistola's became a neighborhood favorite known for its extensive craft beer list, raw bar, and reliable Mexican staples served across brunch, lunch, and dinner.

The Second Major Closure in Two Months

The sudden shuttering of Sancho Pistola's marks a difficult season for the local restaurant group. It is the second of Parker and Gunn's three Mexican eateries to close in just two months.

In late August, the duo announced the permanent closure of their flagship location, Jose Pistola's, which had operated at 263 S. 15th St. in Rittenhouse Square for a massive 19-year run. The Center City location initially closed for what was described as a maintenance issue and ultimately never reopened.

After Jose Pistola’s closed, Parker launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $30,000 for displaced staff and vendor partners. In the fundraising appeal, Parker offered a candid look into the group's ongoing struggles, citing financial hardships stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, rising operational costs, and the devastating, sudden passing of co-owner and executive chef Adan Trinidad in 2021.

"With the shifting of our landscape and continued rising costs, there was a chance that this was going to have to be our last year anyway," Parker wrote regarding the Center City location.

What Remains: Pistola’s Del Sur

Despite losing its Fishtown and Rittenhouse Square locations, the restaurant group still maintains a footprint in the city. Pistola's Del Sur, which opened on East Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia in 2017, remains open.

A Shifting Fishtown Landscape

When Sancho Pistola's first opened in 2014, Fishtown was in the early stages of its massive culinary boom. Over the past decade, the neighborhood has aggressively transformed into one of Philadelphia's hottest dining destinations. The Frankford Avenue corridor and its surrounding blocks have since welcomed heavy-hitting, nationally acclaimed restaurants like Suraya, Kalaya, and Laser Wolf. While the neighborhood continues to attract major hospitality investments, the loss of a 12-year staple like Sancho Pistola's highlights the ongoing operational and financial pressures facing long-time independent operators in a rapidly changing market.
