Philadelphia's Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site

PHILADELPHIA - You can visit Edgar Allan Poe's house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for free. You might even find a few hidden treasures. The house was home to Poe and his wife, Virginia Clemm, and it is now a National Historic Site.

The house is a replica of a Victorian-style house and has modern bathrooms, including running water. Visit the Poe House, where Poe wrote his most famous poem, "The Raven," and get a feeling for what it must have been like to live there.

You might not realize that Poe spent a year in Charleston, South Carolina. However, a 1934 note by W. Stanley Hoole speculated that the poet had visited Charleston during his summer break. The essay is titled "Poet in Uniform."

The Poe Historic Site is affiliated with Independence National Historical Park and is open Friday-Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is free, but you can join the Friends of Poe Society for an annual membership that helps keep the site running. The Friends of Poe Society also holds special events. You can attend some of these to learn more about this mysterious writer. Visit the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site if you're in Philadelphia.
